About Us

TheSkiBug belongs to Rachel and Pete, both keen skiers and snowboarders.

Rachel skiingRachel moved to the Bozel valley, below Courchevel in the French Alps in the winter of 2010, after spending 3 months living down near the French Pyrenees. Prior to that (in another life) Rachel had studied medical biochemistry and then gone on to practice as a lawyer in a high street firm back in her native Cumbria, for a couple of years. She learnt to ski at Kendal dry ski slope at the age of 7 and taught ski-ing there and was a volunteer on the slope in her late teens and went on to do her level 1 snowboard teaching, taking beginner snowboard lessons once a week.

However, realising that a desk job was not for her, she handed in her notice and in 2006 moved out to Bulgaria. Rachel’s initial foray into Bulgaria was through an ill-fated apartment purchase in Bansko back in 2004/2005. After pulling out of that purchase due to silly prices, over-development and rather dubious contract, she went on to become involved in property sales and development in Bulgaria and renovated several old Bulgarian village houses. After around 2 years in Bulgaria, Rachel headed for the French Alps in the winter of 2009, spending a few months working as a relief chalet host and opted to return to France the following autumn, starting out in the French Pyrenees and then moving back up to the Alps, specifically the Three Valleys ski area.

Rachel has been skiing and going on family ski holidays for the last 30 years and decided that living and working in a ski resort was the life she was after, for at least some of the year.

After several years in sales in the UK, Pete moved out to Brittany, France, with his family in 2005 to help run a campsite. He spent a number of summer seasons working on various campsites around France as site manager and was also involved in real estate marketing in France.

However his passion is playing the guitar and he soon ended up playing in several local bands in Brittany. Despite only going on one skiing holiday over 20 years ago, he decided to try working a winter season and found himself working for a small, luxury chalet company in Courchevel for the 2009/2010 season. He was the chalet manager and also in charge of organising the airport transfers for guests and driving them to and from the airport at the start and finish of their ski holiday.

snowboarding in CarinthiaHe learnt to ski and snowboard and became hooked on the sport. Rachel and Pete met in the spring of 2010 in Courchevel and went on to set up their own airport transfer service for the The Three Valleys Ski area, providing a personal and friendly service to take you from the airport to your holiday destination and back.

They also offered an apartment and chalet cleaning service for the Courchevel area, as well as a key holding service and were available for relief chalet hosting work.

snowblower in austriaBut in 2013 they decided to close their business and leave France and after doing some research opted to look at Austria. A couple of visits later and they had both fallen in love with the Carinthia region. In winter of December 2013 they moved into a traditional old house close to Nassfeld ski resort. That first winter the region faced the most snow it had seen in over 100 years and Rachel & Pete were snowed in for several days and the army was sent in to dig snow off the roofs of buildings. Eventually a large snow blower was sent from Salzburg to dig people out of the villages!

After a couple of seasons in Carinthia, and after careful thought and consideration, Rachel & Peter decided to return to Bulgaria and purchased a ski home close to the winter resort of Borovets. With increased commitments in Bulgaria with their dog charity TwitchyNoses it makes sense to be based in one country.

BulgariaNow they spend winters living in a small traditional Bulgarian village near Samokov and Borovets ski resort, working in the resort and ski-ing and snowboarding as much as possible. They are also heavily involved in helping the large stray dog problem in Bulgaria.
